The Dam Decommissioning and Removal focus area includes all technical aspects of reservoir sediment effects and potential sediment management actions. Sediment effects may be within the reservoir, upstream of the reservoir, and along the downstream river corridor. The erosion, and downstream transport, of reservoir sediment may affect public safety, water quality, aquatic and riparian habitat, stream-side infrastructure, and property. Reservoir sediment management strategies may include river erosion and downstream transport, stabilization within the reservoir, and sediment removal. The amount of mitigation depends on the relative volume of reservoir sediment and the sediment management strategy. The cost of reservoir sediment management can be a significant portion of the total dam decommissioning and removal cost. The total cost of dam removal is important for economic investigations of dam removal or sustainable reservoir sediment management.
